The list of “must-haves” often feels endless when you are expecting a baby. Often, between the pram, the cot and the car seat, a maternity photography session is a little bit forgotten. The last few months of pregnancy are busy, full of anticipation and excitement and there is often so much to prepare that just finding the time to book a maternity session is hard. As a Bath maternity photographer, of course I’m a little biased, but I do think maternity photos should not be overlooked.

9 months of waiting… or more

Pregnancy only last for a few months. Most women will only experience it a couple of time in their life. I remember when I was expecting my first daughter, we arranged a meeting with the other mums from our NCT group. One of the babies had been born and we were all very excited to meet him. All of the pregnant mums sat around, looking at the little bundle whilst rubbing their bump. We all new that soon, we would all have a little bundle of our own to share with the world, but who wouldn’t be “just ours”.  I didn’t want to forget how it felt when my baby was kicking or hiccuping.  Maternity photographs record this special in your life, which goes in the blink of an eye.

Memories to cherish

When we get married, having a photographer record the occasion is the logical thing to do. It is a big day, we have planned it carefully and after all, all we have to remind us of the day is the photographs. Why should it be any different for maternity? Pregnancy is a momentous step in the life of a woman or couple, and you will remember it with so much fondness.  I often sit with my girls and we look at photographs. They love looking at the wedding ones, but the maternity ones spark their interest the most: “Is this meee, Mummy?! Or is it Juliette?” Capturing maternity photographs will allow you to share this important time in your life with them.

Telling your story

Sharing your session with your partner and/or your children is a wonderful way to record your story. Involving little ones is a great way to make them feel part of the story going forward and forget the insecurities they can sometimes have about  a new sibling. Hugging and kissing your belly, the focus will be on them. And trust me to make a fuss of them!
